Keep Austin Fed volunteers have picked up and delivered more than a half a million meals in 2014.
The organization’s 21 donors provided 391,533 pounds of food last year, the equivalent of 522,044 meals. The food was distributed to more than 30 sites throughout the greater Austin area, including shelters, affordable housing developments, and food pantries.
If not for dedicated Keep Austin Fed volunteers, the nearly 200 tons of food would have ended up in the landfill, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.
The volunteer-based food rescue nonprofit coordinates the donations of surplus food from restaurants, grocery stores, and farmers markets; trains and provides volunteers to collect and transport the food; and partners with charitable organizations that help people in need, who receive the food.
